Hidden alleles at the alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase locus in Colias butterflies.

چکیده

By varying polyacrylamide gel pore size, the alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase locus of Colias butterflies is shown to contain at least five alkeles, rather than the two which had been reported previously. Two of the alleles have the same apparent net charge, and presumably are detected electrophoretically because of the conformational differences. Additional variation occurs in the isoelectric points of the proteins. It is suggested that electrophoresis employing a single gel of intermediated pore size will fail to discriminate between many alleles, and that the concept of electrophoretic alleles as differing simply in charge may not always be appropriate.

Inheritance of Alpha-Glycerophosphate Dehydrogenase in the Pink Salmon, ONCORHYNCHUS GORBUSCHA (Walbaum).

Genetic crosses of alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (alpha-GPDH) phenotypes in the pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (Walbaum), reveal that this enzyme is encoded by a single locus with two codominant alleles (Slow and Fast). The significance of single gene control of alpha-GPDH is discussed in relation to the purported tetraploid nature of the salmonids.

Adaptation at specific loci. I. Natural selection on phosphoglucose isomerase of Colias butterflies: Biochemical and population aspects.

Electrophoretic variants of phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) in Colias butterflies have been studied from field and laboratory viewpoints. The transmission pattern is that of a dimeric enzyme controlled by one structural gene locus. Populations usually harbor four to six allelic mobility classes. These mobility classes are shared among species complexes, though their frequencies differ widely. Pr...

The Α-glycerophosphate Cycle in Drosophila Melanogaster

"Null" mutations previously isolated at the alphaGpdh-1 locus of Drosophila melanogaster, because of disruption of the energy-producing alpha-glycerophosphate cycle, severely restrict the flight ability and relative viability of affected individuals. Two "null" alleles, alphaGpdh-1(BO-1-4), and alphaGpdh-1(BO-1-5,) when made hemizygous with a deficiency of the alphaGpdh-1 locus, Df(2L)GdhA, wer...

Metabolic resource allocation vs. mating attractiveness: Adaptive pressures on the "alba" polymorphism of Colias butterflies.

The sex-limited "alba" genetic polymorphism in wing color of Colias butterflies has been studied with respect to potential selective pressures on this locus. Alba female pupae, carrying at least one dominant A allele, redirect resources, used by aa pupae for pigmentation, to other metabolic ends. Associated with this reallocation, alba, A-, female adults eclose earlier, retain more larva-derive...

Adaptation at specific loci. V. Metabolically adjacent enzyme loci may have very distinct experiences of selective pressures.

The polymorphic phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) loci have been studied in parallel to experimental work on the phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) polymorphism in Colias butterflies. PGI, PGM and G6PD are also autosomal in Colias. PGM and G6PD are loosely linked (and represent the first identified autosomal linkage group in Colias); they assort independently fro...
